In a coordinated naval operation, the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICG) intercepted and detained the Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) Maa Basanti, some 72 nautical miles away from Sagar Light, in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The boat was carrying some 400-450 gunny bags that were suspected to have betel nuts weighing about 50-60 kilograms each.
There were 14 crew members on board the vessel at the time of apprehension. In accordance with standard procedure, Maa Basanti is being escorted by the ICG Ship to Paradip Port and is to be delivered on April 11, 2025. The vessel and its crew will be taken over by Customs authorities for further investigation and requisite legal action.
This operation underscores the Indian Coast Guard's sustained watchfulness and dedication to protecting the country's maritime interests as well as thwarting illegal activities in India's maritime space. This latest bust is one of a series aimed at curbing smuggling and drug trade in the area.
