New Delhi: In a strategic move to enhance its combat capabilities along the Pakistan border in the western desert, the Indian Army is set to deploy six Apache attack helicopters at a military station in Jodhpur.
According to military officials, the first batch of these helicopters is anticipated to arrive from the United States in the February-March timeframe at the Hindan air base, adhering to the scheduled contract. Subsequently, the choppers will be stationed at a military base in Jodhpur for operational readiness.
The Indian Air Force already boasts a fleet of 22 Apache helicopters stationed at both the western and northern borders. With the Army's induction of six more helicopters, the joint inventory will be strengthened to a total of 28.
More than 50 Indian pilots and technicians have undergone training at American facilities, aligning with the terms of the contract. This preparation ensures the swift operationalization of the Apache fleet, enhancing the nation's defence capabilities.
The American attack helicopters were initially deployed in the eastern Ladakh sector amid rising tensions with China in 2020. Operating from forward bases, the Apache helicopters played a crucial role in reinforcing India's military presence in the region.
Boeing, the original equipment manufacturer, confirmed the commencement of Apache helicopter production for the Indian Army at its cutting-edge facility in Mesa, Arizona. The collaboration with Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited (TBAL) in Hyderabad signifies the ongoing efforts to bolster India's defense capabilities.
Boeing highlighted that the AH-64's state-of-the-art technology and battle-tested performance would significantly enhance the Indian Army's operational effectiveness, reinforcing the country's defensive capabilities in the region.
