The Central government has summoned Canadian Embassy’s Cameron MacKayove amid the planned rally called by the Khalistani supporters in Toronto.

Pro-Khalistani leaders have called a ‘freedom rally’ on July 08 in Canada. The posters for the rally carry threats to India’s envoy in Toronto’s Ottawa and Consul General.

Canadian government stance on ‘freedom rally’

Taking notes from the prevailing situations, Canada has ensured its commitment to the safety of Indian diplomats in the country. Also, the government of Canada has slammed the rally, calling the posters ‘unacceptable’ and has vowed to take necessary action to protect Indian diplomats.

Speaking to the media, Canadian foreign minister Melanie Joly said, “Canada takes its obligations under the Vienna Conventions regarding the safety of diplomats very seriously.”

“Canada remains in close contact with Indian officials in light of some of the promotional material circulating online regarding a protest planned for July 8, which are unacceptable,” the minister said.

S Jaishnakar’s remarks on Khalistani ideology

The summons to the Canadian envoy comes just a day after Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar remarks on Khalistani ideology. He said that “radical, extremist” Khalistani ideology is not good for India or its partner countries like the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia.

In a statement to the news agency PTI, the union minister said, “We have requested our partner countries like Canada, US, UK and Australia where sometimes Khalistani activities happen, not to give space to the Khalistanis. Because their (Khalistanis) radical, extremist thinking is neither good for us nor them nor our relations.”

Recently, on Sunday, Indian Consulate was subjected to arson by pro-Khalistani supporters, drawing sharp condemnation from the US State Department

According to the radical group supporters, the vandalism and arson were in retort reaction to the death of Hardeep Sigh Nijjar, who is a designated terrorist and a chief of pro-Khalistani outfits Khalistan Tiger Force and the Canadian arm of Sikhs For Justices (SFJ), was shot dead last month in Canada.
