In a major boost to Indias naval power, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently launched the countrys fourth nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine at the Ship Building Centre (SBC) in Visakhapatnam. The submarine, currently named S4*, is a significant step in Indias indigenous defence capabilities, with 75% of its components being produced domestically.Strategic importance of the submarineThis addition to Indias submarine fleet is expected to enhance nuclear deterrence against potential adversaries, securing Indias vast coastline and asserting its maritime dominance. As tensions continue to escalate globally, especially in the Indo-Pacific region, strengthening the naval fleet has become a crucial priority for India. The launch of this submarine highlights the countrys commitment to bolstering its defensive and offensive capabilities to prepare for any foreseeable or unpredictable challenges.Continuous progress in nuclear submarine fleetIndias advancements in nuclear submarines are evident with the progress of the third nuclear-powered submarine, INS Aridhaman, which is currently under construction. This follows the successful commissioning of two previous submarines, INS Arihant and INS Arighat. Notably, INS Arighat was commissioned into the Indian Navy in August this year, with INS Aridhaman expected to join the fleet by next year.Strategic clearance for further developmentIn addition to this launch, Indias Cabinet Committee of Security (CCS) cleared the development of two more nuclear-powered attack submarines on October 9. This decision reflects Indias focus on the evolving security landscape of the Indo-Pacific, ensuring that the Indian Navy remains prepared for any potential threats.
