In a significant humanitarian gesture, India has sent a consignment of approximately 1,400 kilograms of anti-cancer drugs to Syria, the Ministry of External Affairs announced. The dispatch of these life-saving drugs underscores India's ongoing commitment to support Syria amid its ongoing challenges.

India’s continued support amid Syrian crisis

The Ministry of External Affairs' spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), emphasising India's dedication to humanitarian efforts in Syria. "In line with our humanitarian commitments, India has dispatched anti-cancer drugs to Syria," Jaiswal stated, along with images of the consignment. This shipment is expected to provide critical support to the Syrian government and its people in their fight against cancer.

India and Syria have historically enjoyed cordial relations, strengthened by deep-rooted people-to-people connections. Despite the ongoing conflict in Syria, the Indian Embassy has remained operational, symbolising India's steadfast support. India has also played a vital role in building the capacity of Syrian youth, offering scholarships and training through the flagship ITEC program.

The dispatch of anti-cancer drugs comes at a time when Syria is facing a health crisis, highlighted by the recent diagnosis of Syria's First Lady, Asma Assad, with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. This news, reported by the state news agency SANA in May, has drawn attention to the critical need for medical support in the country. The First Lady, who previously battled breast cancer in 2019, continues to be a symbol of resilience for the Syrian people.
