India has condemned China’s blocking of the proposal to designate Lashkar-e-Taiba member Sajid Mir as a global terrorist. Pakistan-based Mir is one of India’s most wanted terrorists for masterminding the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks.

India released a strong statement denouncing the move, and claimed that the proposal’s failure demonstrates that ‘something is genuinely wrong with the global counter terrorism architecture’. According to India, the move was fuelled by petty geopolitical interests and revealed a lack of genuine political will in counter-terrorism efforts.

China blocks US-India led effort to blacklist Sajid Mir

The proposal in question was forwarded by the US and co-designated by India. It would have designated Sajid Mir as a global terrorist under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council, and allowed law enforcement to freeze his assets, and sanction travel bans and embargoes.

Where is Sajid Mir now?

Sajid Mir, who planned the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai and a failed 2003 attack in Australia, was arrested by Pakistan in 2022, and sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment. This comes after Pakistan had previously denied the existence of Mir altogether, but the Financial Action Task Force putting it in the “Grey List” forced its hands.

Mir remains on the FBI’s list of Most Wanted Terrorists with a five million dollar bounty on his head.
