Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who arrived in Mumbai to attend the third meeting of the opposition bloc INDIA, lambasted the Adani Group for its alleged financial misdeeds which were highlighted in recent media reports.

Addressing the media in a press conference before the INDIA bloc meeting, Rahul Gandhi said, “The current flavour is G20, and the G20 is about India’s position in the world and what is very important for a country like India is that there is a level playing field and transparency in our economic environment with regard to businesses that operate here.”

Rahul Gandhi highlighted that two prominent global financial newspapers, The Guardian and Financial Times, have raised important questions regarding the Adani Group’s financial activities. He said, “Over a billion dollars of money went from India circulated in different places and returned to India. This clearly proves that they have the documentation supporting it. The first question is, whose money is it? Is it Adani’s money or someone else’s?”

“The mastermind behind this is a person called Vinod Adani who is the brother of Gautam Adani. There are two other people who are involved in this round-tripping of money. One is a gentleman called Nasir Ali Shaban Ahli and another is a Chinese gentleman called Chang Chung Ling. So, the second question arises – why are these two foreign nationals being allowed to play with the valuation of one of the companies that controls almost all of Indian infrastructure,” Gandhi added.

Gandhi further questioned the transparency of an investigation into the claims, saying, “There was an investigation, evidence was given to SEBI and it gave a clean chit to Gautam Adani. So, it is clear that there is something very wrong here.”

Prime Minister must clear his name: Rahul Gandhi attacks PM Modi on Adani allegations

Directly addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi demanded transparency and accountability.

He demanded that a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) be constituted to probe into the reports that associates of the Adani family used Mauritius-based ‘opaque’ investment funds to secretly invest ‘hundreds of millions’ of dollars in the company. The Adani Group has denied these allegations, asserting that the charges are baseless.

“It is very important that the Prime Minister clears his name and categorically explains what is going on. At the very least, a JPC should be allowed and a thorough investigation should take place. I don’t understand why the PM is not forcing an investigation? Why is he quiet and people who are responsible are put behind bars? This is raising very serious questions on the PM just before G20 leaders come here … It is important that this issue is made clear before they [G20 leaders] arrive,” he said.
