India declares national morning over Kuwait leader’s demise

The 86-year-old Emir passed away on Saturday after ruling the Gulf state for just over two years.

As a mark of respect, flags at government buildings across India will fly at half-mast. Authorities have also cancelled official entertainment activities for the day.

The gesture symbolises India's cordial ties with the strategic Middle Eastern nation during a sensitive time of transition.

“His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of the State of Kuwait, passed away on December 16, 2023. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the government of India has decided that there will be one day’s state mourning on December 17,” the communication said.

“On the day of mourning, the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India on all buildings where the national flag is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day,” it said.

PM Modi extends condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to his X account to express his grief and condolences over the Emir’s demise.

Taking it to X, he wrote, “Deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate demise of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. We convey our deepest condolences to the Royal family, the leadership and the people of Kuwait.”
