MPox News: India has confirmed its second case of Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, sparking a rapid response from the Union Health Ministry. A 26-year-old man from Kerala, who recently returned from the UAE, has tested positive for the virus. This new case follows closely behind the first confirmed case in the region, involving a 38-year-old man diagnosed with the more dangerous Clade 1B strain of the virus.

The proximity of these cases has raised concerns of a potential outbreak, prompting the Health Ministry to issue advisories to all states and union territories to prevent further transmission. These advisories are expected to include measures such as public awareness campaigns about Mpox symptoms and transmission, as well as enforcing strict isolation protocols for suspected cases.

Key preventive measures to contain Mpox

The Health Ministry is prioritizing public education to enhance understanding of Mpox, particularly how it spreads and can be prevented. Common symptoms include fever, skin rashes, and swollen lymph nodes, and the public is urged to report any suspected cases promptly.

Strengthening isolation and testing protocols

Health authorities are advising states to establish dedicated isolation units for suspected and confirmed Mpox cases. Hospitals in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have already begun setting up isolation wards. Since there is no specific cure for Mpox, symptomatic treatment and pain management are crucial for patient care.

Rapid testing is essential for outbreak control, and the Health Ministry is expanding diagnostic capabilities through ICMR-approved laboratories. Early detection and isolation are key to containing the spread of Mpox and mitigating its impact. To prevent public panic, the ministry emphasizes clear communication and timely reporting of suspected cases. All cases, even mild ones, must be tested and isolated to prevent further transmission.
