Amid diplomatic stand-off between India and Canada, the Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said that Canada’s allegations against India in killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar are politically driven.

The statement came from official spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Baghchi during the weekly briefing at time when India and Canada’s diplomatic ties are going through rough phase over Nijjar’s killing.

Notably, the statement from MEA came after Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, wanted in India for years. It took tough step after the public allegations strained the India-Canada relationship with both countries expelling their diplomats. On Thursday, India’s visa processing centre in Canada suspended services.

These are politically motivated: MEA on Canada’s allegations

During the addressal, the MEA spokesperson said, “Our High Commissions and Consulates are facing security threats in Canada and cannot process Visa applications temporarily. The security situation is due to inaction by Canada government. We will review it on a regular basis.”

However, India has rejected these allegations.

According to the official statement, Indian high commission, consulates in Canada temporarily unable to process visa applications as work disrupted due to security issues. He further added that Canada has not shared any information with India on Hardeep Singh Nijjar. “It is Canada that needs to look into its growing reputation of being a safe haven for terrorists, extremists, and organised crime,” he added.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day Indian visa services in Canada have been suspended till further notice.
