Update (September 1, 12:50 pm): In a new update on the opposition’s INDIA bloc meeting the logo of the alliance which was supposed to be unveiled today has been postponed and will not be unveiled today.

According to sources, the release of the logo has been postponed to implement new suggestions. Many top leaders of different opposition parties are present at the venue for the third meeting of the alliance. Arvind Kejriwal, Sonia Gandhi, Mehbooba Mufti, Mamta Banarjee, Rahul Gandhi and many other leaders are at the venue now.

The Opposition’s Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance or I.N.D.I.A. started their informal meeting in Mumbai on Thursday. On Friday, the second day of the bloc meeting they are likely to announce a coordination committee of 11 members who would be from principal Opposition parties and are set to unveil a logo for the bloc as 28 non-BJP parties will hold a formal meeting at Mumbai’s Grand Hyatt Hotel.

Seat-sharing arrangement was one of the major issues discussed on the first day of the meeting as elections for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are just around the corner. Some top leaders including Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee stressed the urgency to finalise seat sharing and come out with a joint agenda in a few weeks. 

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also said that he is ready to make sacrifices to fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad Yadav said that the leaders gathered need to put their egos aside for the nation’s sake.

Kharge, former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray, Trinamool Congress chief Banerjee, AAP convener Kejriwal, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin, National Conference’s Farooq Abdullah, and Omar Abdullah, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, CPI(M)’s Sitaram Yechury, CPI’s D Raja, CPI (ML) Dipankar Bhattacharya, Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and SP president Akhilesh Yadav, RLD’s Jayant Chaudhary among others, participated in the informal talks.

INDIA bloc’s Friday meeting, what should we look forward to? 

1. Firstly, the opposition is likely to conduct the logo unveiling for the INDIA bloc today, even though not much was discussed about it on Thursday.

2. The agenda for the formal meeting was discussed on Thursday and the meeting is expected to begin at 11 a.m., after which they would issue a joint statement and address a press conference jointly.

3. According to sources the parties might decide on a spokesperson for the bloc who would speak on behalf of the alliance. The position of Convener of the bloc might also be discussed with competition between Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

4. The Thursday meeting also decided on setting up a coordination committee after discussions which will have four subgroups to look into different agendas. The four sub-groups will have one group to plan the joint programme of the alliance, another to prepare the action plan and manage social media, and one will do research and data analysis to take on the ruling National Democratic Alliance or NDA,

5. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stressed the need for a manifesto of the alliance as early as October 2.

6. On Thursday’s informal meeting several opposition leaders also mentioned that time is limited and finalisation of the poll plans for 2024 is necessary considering that there could be early elections.

7. Issues relating to the rise in prices, unemployment, and farmers’ grievances under the BJP-led government will also be discussed on Friday

8. Moreover, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge reportedly told the meeting to prepare a common national agenda in bullet points and it might be discussed in the formal meeting.

9. States such as Punjab, Delhi, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh are expected to see prolonged negotiations as these states don’t have any pre-existing pacts among the opposition outfits.

10. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said the opposition should be ready for all contingency plans to take on the NDA’s surprise element strategy and gimmicks, PTI reported. The government has convened a special session of Parliament for five days between September 18 and 22.
