AAP wins in Punjab

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a key partner in the INDIA bloc, won the Jalandhar West seat in Punjab. AAP candidate Mohinder Bhagat defeated his nearest rival, BJP nominee Sheetal Angural, by a big margin of over 37,000 votes.

TMC dominates in West Bengal

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, secured three assembly seats, including Raiganj and Ranaghat Dakshin. The TMC also took the lead in the Maniktala assembly segment. The bypolls for these seats were held on July 10.

DMK leads in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Anniyur Siva is leading in the Vikravandi assembly constituency, adding to the INDIA bloc’s successes.

Close contests in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is witnessing close competition, where Congress candidates Kamlesh Thakur and Hardeep Singh Bawa are leading in Dehra and Nalagarh. However, the BJP’s Ashish Sharma was ahead in Hamirpur. Kamlesh Thakur triumphed over BJP's Hoshiyar Singh in Dehra, while Congress' Pushpinder Verma trailed by 1,545 votes behind BJP's Ashish Sharma in Hamirpur. In Nalagarh, Congress' Hardeep Singh Bawa led by 4,137 votes against the BJP's K L Thakur.

Independent candidate leads in Bihar

In Bihar's Rupauli seat, independent candidate Shankar Singh is leading, with his closest rival being Janata Dal (United) candidate Kaladhar Mandal. The seat was previously held by Bima Bharti, who had resigned from JD(U) to join Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and contested the Lok Sabha election from the Purnia parliamentary seat, where she was defeated by independent candidate Rajesh Ranjan.

BJP's sole victory

The Bharatiya Janata Party won the Hamirpur seat in Himachal Pradesh and is leading in the Amarwara constituency of Madhya Pradesh.

Implications for BJP

These bypoll results are seen as a critical test for the BJP, which won 240 seats in the recent elections, falling short of the 272 majority mark and needing support from allies in the NDA coalition to form a government. With the support of key allies like N Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar's JD(U), which secured 16 and 12 seats in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar respectively, along with other coalition partners, the NDA surpassed the halfway mark. However, these bypoll results indicate a shift in the political landscape.
