Speaking at a joint press conference of the opposition bloc INDIA in Mumbai on Friday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that it would be ‘impossible’ for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to win in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections if the Opposition stays united.

“This [opposition] stage represents 60% of the Indian population. If the parties on this stage unite, it is impossible for the BJP to win an election,” Gandhi said.

The Congress MP then appealed to all opposition parties to ‘come together’ in the most efficient way. “So the task in front of us is to come together in the most efficient way possible. And two major steps have been taken in this regard – a coordination committee and that we will expedite all seat-sharing discussions. These are two powerful steps in ensuring that the INDIA alliance defeats the BJP,” Gandhi said.

The INDIA bloc announced a 14-member central coordination committee; however, the leader of the committee is yet to be named.

“The real work in this alliance is the relationships that are forged between the leaders of this alliance. I can say with confidence that these two meetings have done a huge amount in building rapport between all the leaders and ensuring that all of us work together as one,” Gandhi added. “I can see that there is flexibility among all the leaders in the way we approach things. There are differences, of course, but I am extremely impressed by the way those differences are minimised and ironed out.”

Rahul Gandhi attacks PM Modi over Adani links

In his speech, Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the allegations raised against Gautam Adani and called on him to ‘make his position clear’. “The nexus between the Prime Minister and a particular businessman is there for every single person to see,” he said.

Gandhi further attacked the Modi government, saying that its task was to take money from the poor and transfer it into the hands of a select group of people.

“The idea behind PM Modi’s government is to extract money from the poor people of this country and transfer it to a limited few. So we are going to propose a clear set of ideas that will once again involve the poor people, the farmers, the workers in the progress of this country,” he said.
