IMD forecast: Heatwave threat looms over Delhi, parts of UP, Jharkhand till Sunday

Conditions suggest a favorable environment for the further progression of the monsoon over more areas of Chhattisgarh and Telangana in the next 24 hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a fresh warning on Wednesday evening regarding the prevalence of heatwavehttps://www.topindiannews.com/national/north-india-s-heatwave-to-persist-until-june-14-rainfall-alert-issued-for-these-states-news-18961 conditions across India. According to the alert, many regions of Uttar Pradesh, isolated areas of Jharkhand, and select pockets of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and Bihar are expected to experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions until June 16, 2024.

Updates on heatwave 

In recent updates on the social media platform X, the Met department highlighted the possibility of severe heatwave conditions in northern and central parts of India.

 

The Met department defines Heat Waves as periods of unusually high temperatures compared to the historical norms of a region. Consequently, the criteria for declaring Heat Waves vary based on the climatology of each area.

Heatwave categorization 

A Heatwave is designated when the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degrees C for Plains and at least 30 degrees C for Hilly regions. The categorization is further detailed:

a) Based on Departure from Normal:

- Heat Wave: Departure from normal is between 4.5°C to 6.4°C
- Severe Heat Wave: Departure from normal exceeds 6.4°C

b) Based on Actual Maximum Temperature:

- Heat Wave: Actual maximum temperature is 45°C or higher
- Severe Heat Wave: Actual maximum temperature is 47°C or higher

Red alert in East UP 

The IMD has extended the red alert for heatwave conditions in East Uttar Pradesh from June 12 to June 15, while Bihar and Jharkhand will experience similar conditions from June 12 to June 13. West Uttar Pradesh is expected to face hot weather conditions from June 13 to June 15. Intense heatwave conditions are anticipated in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal from June 12 to June 14. Delhi, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Punjab are unlikely to see relief from the harsh weather in the next four days. Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu are also expected to endure scorching heat from June 12 to June 13.
