IIT Delhi student found hanging in hostel room, Investigation on

The matter came to light after the family of the student asked his hostel mates to check on him as he was not answering his phone.

In a suspected case of suicide, a 24-year-old M.Tech student from the Indian Institution of Technology in Delhi was found dead in his room. 

About tragic incident

Sanjay Nerker, a native of Nashik, Maharashtra was found hanging in his hostel room at IIT-Delhi. As per a police official, the situation came to light when Nerker's parents tried calling him. Unable to reach him by phone, asked his hostel mates to check on him.

 

Found door locked from inside

Upon reaching Nerker's room, his hostel mates found it locked from the inside. They told the hostel guard, who forcibly opened the door. They found Nerker's body hanging from the room's ceiling. After the tragic incident, student's relatives have been notified, and an investigation is underway to determine the reason of death. 

Three cases of suspected student suicides

The month spanning December 19, 2023-January 18, 2024 witnessed three cases of suspected student suicides on the campus of IIT-Kanpur. 

Student suicide rates increased

In recent years, there has been a rise in the number of student suicides in Maharashtra. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in 2020, there were 1,535 student suicides in Maharashtra, accounting for 11.4% of the total student suicides in India. This is a significant increase from 2019, when there were 1,269 student suicides in the state.
