Republic Day 2024: History will be made in this year's Republic Day as women Agniveer Vayu soldiers take their place alongside IAF personnel in the parade, an Indian Air Force official on Monday confirmed on Monday.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) posted on microblogging platform X, "Proud to wear the blues. Proud to march together. Proud to be a part of Republic Day 2024."

The Agnipath scheme, launched in 2022, opened doors for young women to contribute their skills and dedication to the country's defence. It provides four years of service in the Armed Forces, after which those selected for enrolment can be deployed as regular cadres, where they will serve for a period of a minimum of 15 years.

Two all-women contingents to lead

The IAF contingent is not the only one setting a new precedent. Two all-women contingents - one comprising soldiers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and another representing the Armed Forces Medical Services - will take to the Rajpath, demonstrating the unwavering strength and versatility of Indian women across various branches of the military.

As per defence officials, "One contingent, including 144 personnel, would have all women soldiers, including 60 from the Army and the remaining from the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy."

Who is the chief guest of Republic Day celebrations?

French President Emmanuel Macron will be the guest of honour at the Republic Day parade on January 26. This is the sixth time France has been honoured with this role for Republic Day celebrations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has placed significant emphasis on 'Nari Shakti,' actively promoting avenues for women in the defence forces. The IAF's inclusion of female fighter pilots and the Navy's appointment of a woman officer to command a warship are testament to this commitment.
