IAF plans 20-year extension for Su-30MKI fleet, enhancing capabilities for future dominance

IAF Su-30MKI fleet: In a strategic move, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to prolong the service life of its Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jet fleet by more than two decades. With the induction of Sukhoi-30 MKI jets beginning nearly two decades ago, these Russian-origin combat aircraft are poised to remain a cornerstone of the Indian Air Force for the next 15-20 years.

Prolonging Service Life

The IAF, having inducted 272 Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft into its fleet, is now focusing on extensive testing of the airframe and other components to extend the fighter jets' service life by another 20 years or more. This strategic move aims to sustain the formidable fleet until around 2045-2050.

Enhancing Capabilities

Simultaneously, the Indian Air Force is actively working on enhancing the capabilities of the Su-30MKI fleet. Major upgrades are in the pipeline, encompassing indigenous advanced radars, avionics, and weapon systems. The force is set to equip its fleet with indigenous upgrades, including the advanced Virupaaksha radar.

Indigenous Technological Advancements

The Virupaaksha radar, developed indigenously, is designed to meet the diverse requirements of the IAF in various sectors. Positioned as the most advanced among all Sukhoi-30 variants globally, this radar will significantly elevate the fleet's technological prowess.

Mission to Indigenise Equipment

As part of a mission to bolster indigenous capabilities, the Indian Air Force is actively pursuing the indigenisation of its inventory. Plans are underway to procure equipment from Indian firms, amounting to over Rs three lakh crore in the near future. This strategic shift aligns with the broader goal of fostering self-reliance and technological advancement within the country.

Versatile Arsenal

The Su-30MKI, known for its multi-role air dominance capabilities, carries a diverse array of weapons. This includes the Astra Mk-1 long-range air-to-air missile, Brahmos Air Launched missile, and various bombs. The planned upgrades and service life extension underscore the IAF's commitment to maintaining a potent and technologically advanced fleet.
