Rahul Gandhi, who is now the Leader of Opposition, congratulated BJP MP Om Birla for being selected as Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second time. While speaking in the Parliament, Gandhi said, “I am confident that you will allow us to speak. The question is not how efficiently the House is run. The question is how much of India's voice is being allowed to be heard. So the idea that you can run the House efficiently by silencing the voice of the Opposition is non-democratic. And this election has shown that the people of India expect the Opposition to defend the Constitution, the 'Samvidhan' of this country..."

Be Impartial: Opposition MPs TR Baalu to Om Birla

Apart from Rahul Gandhi, T R Baalu, the DMK leader and Member of Parliament also congratulated the newly elected Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla in his address to the chair. While congratulating Birla, Baalu said, “The lotus always floats over the water but it doesn't allow the water to stick on it. Kindly be impartial.”

In the meantime, it is noteworthy that the house elected three-time BJP MP Om Birla as Speaker for a second term in a row through a voice vote on a resolution put up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seconded by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. "Yes" and "No" reverberated across the assembly as pro-tem speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab proclaimed Om Birla the new lower house speaker.

The opposition, which had nominated K Suresh to represent the INDIA bloc as Speaker, refrained from advocating for a split vote.
Conventionally, the opposition and the ruling party work together to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Election of Om Birla

In the 543-member Lok Sabha, the NDA commands 293 MPs. It was able to prove its overwhelming majority to guarantee Om Birla's return to the chair he occupied in the 17th Lok Sabha.

The 18th Lok Sabha's first session started on June 24 and ends on July 3. The Rajya Sabha's 264th Session will convene on June 27 and end on July 3. President Murmu is expected to address a joint session of both chambers of Parliament on June 27.
