GHMC facial recognition attendance system: In a recent directive, Hyderabad Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi has mandated that all Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) employees must register for a facial recognition attendance system. The Mayor warned that non-compliance would lead to disciplinary action against respective Heads of Departments (HODs).

Surprise inspection highlights lack of accountability

The announcement came after Mayor Vijayalakshmi conducted a surprise inspection at the GHMC headquarters. During the inspection, she reviewed operations across the Town Planning, Health, and Veterinary Departments. In a subsequent meeting with Additional Commissioners and HODs, the Mayor emphasized that both permanent and outsourced employees across all departments are required to enroll in the facial recognition system to ensure accountability. Any lack of adherence, she noted, would result in strict measures.

Verification of outsourced employees

During her visit, the Mayor questioned the Additional Commissioner on the precise number of outsourced employees at the GHMC headquarters, citing inconsistencies in the reporting. She directed officials to submit detailed records for all outsourced staff, verifying that each hiring received appropriate clearance from the Commissioner.

Strengthening oversight across departments

To enhance transparency, Mayor Vijayalakshmi also instructed that all employees receiving a salary—regardless of their departmental affiliation—be included in the facial recognition system. She further mandated that any future hiring of outsourced personnel must be centralized at the GHMC head office for improved oversight.

Prompt resolution of public complaints

In addition to employee monitoring, Mayor Vijayalakshmi stressed the need for a timely response to public grievances. She urged officials to prioritize resolving citizen complaints and avoid recurring issues. If a complaint remains unresolved, officials must provide a written explanation to the applicant. The Mayor cautioned that HODs failing to meet these standards may face disciplinary consequences.
