New Delhi: Once again, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has criticized India, claiming the country is becoming increasingly hostile toward religious minorities, particularly Muslims. However, many Indians, especially those living in the country, are perplexed by these reports. As someone who has seen the real situation on the ground, it's clear that these claims do little more than create unnecessary fear, especially among young Muslims. Instead of uplifting communities, these reports sow mistrust and division.

A one-sided narrative

USCIRF’s criticism has followed a familiar pattern. Each year, it releases reports that emphasize isolated incidents, portraying India as a hostile environment for minorities. What remains conveniently ignored are the numerous programs and initiatives that aim to empower these communities. From educational scholarships to job training, the government has actively worked toward uplifting Muslims and other minorities, yet these positive developments are rarely mentioned in the reports.

Harmful effects on youth

The biggest concern lies in how these biased narratives affect young Muslims in India. Constantly being told that they belong to a persecuted minority fosters a sense of alienation, creating unnecessary fear and frustration. These divisive reports can make young people feel as though their country has abandoned them, feeding into feelings of resentment and fueling radical voices that exploit these fears.

Progress ignored by international critics

In reality, the government has made significant strides in improving the lives of minorities, offering scholarships, skills training, and educational opportunities to uplift young Muslims. But instead of acknowledging this progress, USCIRF focuses on exaggerating isolated incidents. As citizens living in India, it’s important to push back against such narratives and focus on unity, ensuring all communities feel empowered and valued.
