PM Modi Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi has outlined a three-step approach for citizens to combat the rising threat of 'digital arrest' scams. In his 'Mann ki Baat' address on Sunday, he advised citizens to remain calm, recognize the signs of fraud, and report any incidents without delay.

The Prime Minister highlighted the growing menace of cybercriminals posing as law enforcement officials, warning of arrest if a sum isn’t paid. "Digital arrest," he explained, is a scam where criminals impersonate officials to scare victims into paying money, exploiting public fear. Cases of this type have been emerging across the country, and PM Modi reassured that government agencies are actively working to combat these crimes in collaboration with state authorities.

During his address, he emphasized: "There is no system like digital arrest in our law. It’s pure fraud, a deceitful act by criminals who are enemies of society. Multiple investigative agencies are collaborating to eliminate this scam." He also aired a video that demonstrated how these scammers manipulate victims by pretending to be officials from probe agencies, preying on their fear.

The Prime Minister urged citizens to follow a simple three-step method for handling these calls: "Wait, Think, Act."

  1. Wait – Remain calm. Avoid making rushed decisions or disclosing any personal information. If possible, take a screenshot or record the call as evidence.

  2. Think – Recognize that no legitimate government agency will threaten arrest, demand payment, or conduct interrogations over the phone or via video call. If the caller’s approach raises alarm, it’s likely fraudulent.

  3. Act – Contact the National Cyber Helpline at 1930, file a report on the official portal, inform family members, and notify the police. Retain any evidence as a safeguard.

PM Modi also noted that the National Cyber Coordination Centre is working with various agencies to strengthen responses to such scams and protect citizens from cyber fraud.
