An earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale shook the national capital, New Delhi, and surrounding regions early Monday morning. The tremors, which struck at around 4 AM, were felt across Delhi-NCR, creating a sense of fear among residents. While this was not the most powerful earthquake recorded in the region, it has once again raised concerns about Delhi’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
Delhi is categorized under Seismic Zone IV, which makes it highly susceptible to earthquakes. Although the region does not experience the highest number of quakes in India, tremors from earthquakes occurring in other seismic zones, particularly the Himalayan Hindukush mountain range, are often felt in the capital city. This geographic placement increases the risk of potential devastation in the event of a major earthquake.
Certain parts of Delhi are considered relatively safer from earthquake damage due to their solid ground foundation and structural integrity. These include JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University), AIIMS, Chhatarpur, and Naraina. These areas have historically experienced less damage during previous earthquakes, making them some of the safest zones in the city.
On the other hand, several areas are highly vulnerable to earthquake-related destruction, particularly those located near the Yamuna River and floodplain regions. Some of the most at-risk locations include:
North Campus (Delhi University)
Sarai Kale Khan
Geeta Colony
Shakarpur
Paschim Vihar
Wazirabad
Rithala
Rohini
Jahangirpuri
Bawana
Karol Bagh
Janakpuri
Other places such as Indira Gandhi International Airport, Hauz Khas, Burari, and Najafgarh are also categorized as moderate-risk zones.
While recent tremors have been unsettling, Delhi’s most powerful earthquake occurred on August 27, 1960—over 64 years ago. The 5.6 magnitude earthquake led to significant structural damage, with multiple buildings reporting cracks and partial collapses.
As Delhi continues to expand rapidly with new infrastructure projects, experts emphasize the importance of earthquake-resistant construction and strict adherence to building regulations. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines in the event of another earthquake.
