In a significant political shift, the National Conference (NC) and Congress alliance has claimed victory in the recent Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. Following the triumph, Safia Abdullah Khan, sister of NC leader Omar Abdullah, shared a heartfelt photo of herself alongside her brother and mother on social media, playfully inquiring about the mood of party workers with the popular phrase, "How's the Josh?"—a nod to a famous line from the Vicky Kaushal film Uri: The Surgical Strike. "NC wallon, how's the josh, (people of NC, how's the josh)," she tweeted.

Election results overview

According to the Election Commission, the National Conference emerged victorious in 41 constituencies and was leading in one more, while Congress secured six seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 29 seats, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) bagged three, and seven Independents also triumphed. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), People’s Party, and CPI-M each won one seat.

Omar Abdullah contested and won both the Budgam and Ganderbal Assembly constituencies. Earlier in the day, Farooq Abdullah, the NC’s veteran leader and Omar's father, expressed confidence that his son would assume the role of Chief Minister, underscoring that "the mandate was clear."

A new political era

The NC and Congress alliance marked a return to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections after a decade, operating under a seat-sharing formula of 51:32. This election was also historic as it was the first held since Jammu and Kashmir's special status was revoked in 2019.

Omar Abdullah previously served as Chief Minister from 2009 to 2015 and later held the position of Leader of the Opposition until 2018, during a tumultuous period when the BJP-PDP coalition collapsed, leading to the imposition of Governor's Rule.
