Maharashtra: A four- month-old baby girl has been left without a family after a shocking case of illegal relinquishment came to light in Mumbai. A Hindu woman did not want a baby so she used Aadhar card of a Muslim woman at KEM hospital.

Deal of two women

The Muslim woman, who had faced a confinement, wanted to borrow the child without going through the lengthy legal process. But when the baby was latterly set up to be HIV positive, she abandoned her, according to a report. A deal that went wrong of the two women, living in the same Kalyan neighbourhood, made a deal during the Hindu woman's gestation. Her hubby was a drug addict, and she did not want the baby. The Muslim woman, on the other hand, was hopeless to be a mother again.

So, she promised to borrow the child and handed her Aadhaar card to get the birth registered under her name. In October 2024, a Hindu woman delivered a baby at KEM Hospital using the identity of a Muslim woman. The birth instrument listed the invigorated as a Muslim girl with the Muslim woman as her mother. Five days after discharge, she took the baby home, allowing she had eventually become a mother again.

An illness that changed everything

Effects took a woeful turn in January when the baby demanded an appendicitis surgery at Wadia Hospital. During medical tests, she was set up to be HIV positive. Shocked by the opinion, the Muslim woman abandoned the baby and revealed the entire story to sanitarium staff. This led to the involvement of the original Sakhi centre, a women and child weal organisation, which advised authorities.

Police action and disquisition

Following an dispatch from the Sakhi centre, the Thane quarter child protection helpline was informed on 21 February. Police finally managed to track down the Hindu woman and, on 28 February and filed a zero FIR at Manpada police station of Thane district. The case has been now transferred to Bhoiwada police station in Mumbai for farther investigation. Both women now has to face charges under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and for cheating under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

A call for stronger relinquishment rules

officers and activists are now raising enterprises over illegal abdications passing in hospitals. An officer from the Thane quarter child protection commission told that  'People should follow relinquishment rules, and at the same time, relinquishment complications need to be eased through government intervention.'
