New Delhi: Prem Prakash Pandey, also known as PP, a notorious criminal linked to underworld don Chhota Rajan, has been making headlines not for his criminal past but for his transformation into a Mahant. After spending 14 years in Almora Jail, Uttarakhand, he took Guru Diksha and has now been initiated into the Juna Akhara, sparking controversy across the country.
Prem Prakash Pandey, alias PP, was once a feared name in the underworld. With more than 60 cases, including charges of murder and extortion, he rose to prominence as Chhota Rajan's right-hand man. His criminal career began in the early 1990s, with his involvement in liquor smuggling and assaults. However, his notoriety skyrocketed after he escaped from Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail and joined the ranks of international criminals. He became second-in-command to Chhota Rajan after the latter parted ways with Dawood Ibrahim following the 1993 Mumbai blasts.
Pandey’s criminal empire spanned across various countries, and his activities were not limited to India. He was involved in several gang wars in Nepal, Malaysia, and Pakistan. One of his most infamous plots was an attempt to assassinate Dawood Ibrahim in 1998 and again in 2000. Though unsuccessful, these plans further cemented his place in the criminal underworld.
In March 2023, Pandey took his first step towards a new life when he received Guru Diksha from Dandinath Ji Maharaj, a prominent figure in the Nath Sampradaya in Nepal. He was given the name Prakash Nath, signaling the beginning of his spiritual journey. His newfound devotion was said to be the result of years of meditation and penance during his imprisonment.
Recently, his spiritual status took another leap when Thanapati Rajendra Giri Ji Maharaj of the Juna Akhara bestowed upon him the title of Mahant. Along with this, he was declared the caretaker of several temples, including Gangotri Bhairav Temple and Kalika Mata Temple. This transformation has caused a stir, especially among those familiar with his dark past.
The news of Pandey becoming a Mahant has raised eyebrows and stirred debates. How can a man with such a violent and criminal history rise to a spiritual position of prominence? Critics argue that the Juna Akhara, one of the most respected sects in Sanatan Dharma, has tarnished its image by associating with a man who once terrorized the streets. However, Rajendra Giri Maharaj defended the decision, stating that Pandey has repented for his sins and shown genuine dedication to spiritual practices.
"The further process will be completed in the Kumbh Mela of 2025," Maharaj said, emphasizing that Pandey’s journey is far from over.
Pandey’s transformation raises several questions. Is this truly a case of redemption, or is it merely a way to use religion to gain influence? While some see his initiation into the Akhara as a sign of change, others view it with skepticism. Only time will tell whether Pandey’s new role as Mahant is genuine or a calculated move to escape his notorious past.
