This year for the first time, the Delhi Police's marching contingent will comprise all women at the 75th Republic Day parade on January 26. 80 per cent of the women belong to the northeast part of India. An officer has reported that the participants are seen daily at the Kartyava Path practising enthusiastically.

The Defence Minister's call for inclusion

Last year Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conveyed to all participating state governments and departments that more women should be included in the bands, contingents, and tableaux. Also, there was a need to "bridge the gap" between the people from the northeast region and the police according to Delhi Police. Therefore, they ensure that they onboard individuals belonging to the eight states of the northeast.

Details on the contingent's dynamics

Last year the contingent was led by a male officer, but this time a female IPS officer, Shweta K Sugathan, will lead the marching contingent of 194 female head constables and constables of the force. Further constable Ruyangunuo Kense will lead the women's pipe band comprising of 135 constables. The contingent will proudly play the "Delhi Police Song" while marching. All of the participants are very excited as reported by Special Commissioner of Police (Armed Police) Robin Hibu.

The Delhi Police's dedicated contingent

The Delhi Police's marching contingent holds a record of partaking in all Republic Day parades since India was declared a Republic (on January 26, 1950). Over the years they have been recognised 15 times as the best marching contingent.

They last won the title in 2021:

The police department's work towards inclusion and representation is a healthy sign of their dedication towards a balanced workforce. Their motto is "Shanti, Seva aur Nyaya'', translating to "Peace, Service and Justice".
