New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed strong criticism against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, highlighting their lack of action and engagement in addressing the recent surge of violence in Manipur. Four villagers lost their lives in an unfortunate incident in Thoubal district, prompting Priyanka Gandhi to question the efficacy of advertisements in achieving true greatness.

Neglect, inaction

Gandhi pointed out that Prime Minister Modi had not visited Manipur, nor had he engaged with leaders from the state to discuss the ongoing crisis. She emphasized the urgent need for concrete actions to address the escalating violence, curfews in multiple districts, and the eight-month-long ordeal faced by the people of Manipur.

Leadership critique

In her statement, Priyanka Gandhi questioned whether the leadership displayed by PM Modi was adequate for Manipur's needs. She underscored that mere rhetoric and advertisements cannot substitute for genuine greatness in leadership.

Demand for stability

The Congress general secretary urged the government to take substantial measures to restore stability in Manipur, echoing the sentiments of the people who have endured months of murder, violence, and destruction.

Roots of violence

The violence in Manipur, which has claimed around 200 lives since May, originated from clashes between two ethnic groups. A Tribal Solidarity March triggered the unrest when the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status led to protests and violence. The Opposition has been vocal in demanding the removal of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, holding him responsible for failing to control the situation.

CBI investigations

In a related development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed two separate charge sheets against five individuals in connection with the case of two missing Manipuri students whose bodies surfaced on September 25 last year. The CBI, while acknowledging the incident, has yet to locate the bodies of the victims.
