In a dramatic turn of events, Himachal Pradesh minister Vikramaditya Singh withdrew his resignation on Wednesday evening, hours after submitting it following alleged humiliation. His resignation came amid a brewing political crisis in the state triggered by the Congress' recent defeat in the Rajya Sabha elections.

Why did Vikramaditya Singh resign?

Singh, son of former chief minister Virbhadra Singh and son-in-law of current state Congress president Pratibha Singh, tendered his resignation earlier in the day, citing attempts to undermine him.

Why did Vikramaditya Singh withdraw his resignation?

Following intervention by senior Congress leaders deputed by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Singh retracted his resignation, stating, "It is the responsibility of every individual to strengthen the organization. In the larger interest and unity of the party, the resignation by me in the morning which the CM refused to accept, I would not like to press it further. There was no danger (to the government), it was just a creation,”

No confidence against Congress

The Congress has been facing criticism after its candidate, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, lost the Rajya Sabha seat to BJP's Harsh Mahajan. This defeat has fueled speculation of the BJP seeking a no-confidence motion against the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led government.

To address the situation, Kharge dispatched a team of observers to Shimla to engage with disgruntled MLAs, including Singh. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized the party's commitment to protecting the people's mandate and hinted at potential stern measures, stating, "The Congress will not hesitate to take some tough steps as the party is our priority and will not let the people's mandate be betrayed."

Meanwhile, the state assembly witnessed unruly scenes as the Congress moved a motion to suspend BJP MLAs for alleged disrespect towards the speaker. The BJP members refused to leave, leading to the house's adjournment. Later, the budget was passed without BJP participation before the session was adjourned indefinitely.
