A delegation from TIPRA Motha met with the Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday, where they placed their demand for a ‘constitutional solution’ to achieve a ‘Greater Tipraland’ state.

The demands were spearheaded by Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the chief of Tipraha Indigenous People’s Regional Alliance (TIPRA Motha Party) and the royal scion of the erstwhile kingdom of Tripura.

“Our agenda is very clear — a Constitutional solution to our demand for Greater Tipraland. We met him today and have made it clear that we are interested in solving the genuine problems of the indigenous people. People are getting restless and we need an early ending,” Debbarma told ANI.

“We stuck to our point that we want the indigenous people of Tripura to have a life of dignity, a life where they can have rights over their own land and rights for the next generation. So we spoke on those issues and we have been very clear that we are not interested in anything else,” he added.

Greater Tipraland refers to a proposed state that will be carved out of Tripura, which will be inhabited by the Tiprasa (the indigenous inhabitants of Tripura). The Tipraland will be a state for the 19 indigenous tribes of the state, which can be carved out under Articles 2 and 3 of the Indian Constitution. The new state will not exclude either the majority Hindu population or the 9% minority Muslim population, TIPRA Motha leader Jagadish Debbarma said.

Centre’s attention on Manipur; don’t want a similar situation in Tripura: TIPRA Chief

Speaker to the reporters, TMP leader Debbarma said that the situation in Manipur is ‘unfortunate’ and Tripura should not have to face similar ethnic violence. Debbarma told reporters that Amit Shah told the TIPRA delegation that the Centre’s attention is focused on Manipur at the moment, but they will work on the Tipraland demand soon.
