As D-day approaches for the much-anticipated Chandrayaan-3 soft landing, 140 crore Indians have been crossing their fingers. Nationwide supplications to God are being made for the accomplishment of the ISRO mission.

The scheduled timing for the soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon’s south pole on August 23, 2023 (Wednesday), is around 18:04 IST, with the powered descent of Vikram lander expected at 1745 IST.

The live telecast of the landing operations at Mission Operation Complex (MOX) will begin at 17:20 IST on Wednesday. Live actions of landing will be available on the ISRO website, its YouTube channel, Facebook, and public broadcaster DD National TV from 17:27 IST on Aug 23, 2023.

But what if Chandrayaan-3 misses the landing today:

Few days back, the chairman of ISRO S Somnath announced that there is no way that Chandrayaan-3 will miss the landing on August 23, even if the engine stops or the sensors fail, ‘Vikram’ will make the landing. But what if everything fails? The mission chief has other plans:

The second attempt to make the soft landing on the moon will be done on August 24. After internal tests and when the moon is fully illuminated at 5.45 p.m., the soft-landing procedure will begin. It will be 17 terrifying minutes beginning at 5.45 pm when the lander fires its engines and gets ready to land.

The engine will change the position from horizontal to vertical for the landing, which is the most crucial part.

Since a lunar day is equal to 14 days on Earth, there will be another 14 days to try again if the Chandrayaan-3 soft landing attempt today is unsuccessful. When the sun rises over the next moon, the window will open.

However, on August 22, the organisation tweeted and confirmed that systems are doing the regular checks and everything is going on smoothly.
