On Wednesday morning, several regions in Delhi and Noida experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, offering a welcome break from the relentless humidity that had plagued the area. The early morning showers brought significant relief to residents, who had been grappling with oppressive humidity in recent days. Visuals from various parts of Delhi-NCR showed rain drenching different regions, a sight that many welcomed.

The downpour continued through the morning, with weather reports indicating substantial rainfall across multiple areas. Commuters faced challenges as traffic slowed due to waterlogged roads. Despite these disruptions, the cool breeze and overcast skies provided a refreshing contrast to the recent stifling heat. Meteorologists had forecasted this rainfall, attributing it to the advancing monsoon system. Rain is expected to persist intermittently throughout the day, potentially offering further respite from the sweltering heat and humidity.

Previous rainfall impact

On July 22, Delhi-NCR also witnessed moderate rainfall, which led to waterlogging in several areas and disrupted traffic across the city. Vehicles were seen wading through inundated roads, and some public transport vehicles broke down due to the flooding. Traffic had to be rerouted as a result. According to Safdarjung, the city's primary weather station, 31.1 mm of rain was recorded, while Pitampura saw 48.5 mm and Delhi University reported 39.5 mm.

Rising water levels in Yamuna

The recent rains are expected to cause an increase in water levels in the Yamuna River over the coming days. Authorities have issued alerts to residents in Noida’s riverside villages, which faced severe flooding during last year's monsoon season. The rising water levels could pose significant challenges for both Delhi and Noida residents.

Nationwide monsoon update

Heavy rainfall across large parts of India has helped offset the June deficit, resulting in a surplus of overall monsoon precipitation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts more heavy to very heavy rain over northwest India and western parts of peninsular India in the next two to three days, with additional rain expected in the northeast. After a deficit of 11 percent in June, with northwest India recording a shortfall of 33 percent, the recent rains have provided a much-needed boost for the country's crucial agricultural sectors, including rice, wheat, and sugarcane.
