New Delhi: Parts of Delhi were drenched in heavy rainfall today, offering respite from scorching temperatures and stifling humidity that had gripped the city for days. Visuals shared by the news agency ANI depicted downpours in areas like Munirka and Sarita Vihar, alongside other parts of the national capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued rain throughout the day, providing temporary relief from the intense pre-monsoon heatwave.

Delhi breathed fresh air after Sept 19, 2023

The rainfall not only cooled the city but also significantly improved air quality. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi registered its first "satisfactory" air quality index (AQI) in 282 days, with a reading of 79 at 4 pm today. This marked a notable improvement from Wednesday's moderate AQI of 136. The last time Delhi enjoyed "satisfactory" air quality was on September 19, 2023, when the AQI was recorded at 73. The rain helped disperse pollutants like PM2.5 and PM10, which had been lingering due to coarse dust particles from construction sites.

IMD prediction on rain

The IMD has further predicted heavy to very heavy rain over the upcoming weekend in Delhi. Today's rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds up to 40 kmph, is part of a larger weather system expected to intensify over the next few days. Heavy rainfall, defined as between 64.5 mm to 124.4 mm in a day, and very heavy rainfall, ranging from 124.5 mm to 244.4 mm, is anticipated on June 29 and June 30, leading to localized flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Monsoon's arrival this weekend

In anticipation of the monsoon's arrival in Delhi this weekend, officials are preparing for potential disruptions caused by intense rainfall. Last year, the monsoon reached Delhi on June 26, and the first showers of 2022 were recorded on June 30. The IMD and local authorities have advised residents to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to mitigate any adverse impacts of the impending weather conditions.
