New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi delivered a scathing critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, accusing him of shielding industrialist Gautam Adani despite corruption allegations. Addressing the press, Gandhi demanded Adani's immediate arrest following his indictment in a bribery case in the United States. “Adani has broken both Indian and American laws. Why is he still a free man? This proves our claims that the PM is protecting him and is complicit in corruption,” Gandhi asserted.

Adani Accused of Rs 2,029 Crore Bribery to Secure Solar Contracts

The allegations stem from US prosecutors indicting Adani and his nephew for reportedly paying Rs 2,029 crore in bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar power contracts from 2020 to 2024. These bribes allegedly involved officials in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Gandhi underscored the severity of the situation, criticizing the lack of accountability for the Adani Group chairperson.

PM Modi and Adani Nexus: A Political Talking Point

The Congress and Gandhi have repeatedly alleged a close nexus between PM Modi and Adani, using it as a critical weapon in election campaigns against the BJP. Gandhi claimed the corruption scandal directly benefitted the BJP, further demanding an inquiry into the industrialist’s transactions through a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). “This man has acquired India’s assets through corrupt means while supporting the BJP. A JPC probe is essential,” he stated.

Winter Session Showdown Looms

Rahul Gandhi indicated that he would vigorously raise the Adani issue during the upcoming Winter session of Parliament. He emphasized that investigations must transcend political boundaries and include all states implicated in the bribery allegations. “Investigations should be conducted in all states, regardless of the ruling party. Adani’s crimes have tainted India’s governance,” he said.

Gandhi concluded his remarks by reaffirming his commitment to exposing corruption. “It is my duty as Leader of the Opposition to raise this issue. Adani’s corrupt practices must not be ignored, and those involved must face justice,” he declared.
