In Hathras, a young man named Lakshman eloped with a Muslim girl from his locality, leading to a series of tragic events. When local police were unable to locate the couple, they allegedly detained Lakshman's 45-year-old brother-in-law, Sanjay Singh, from Agra. Sanjay was held in illegal detention for three days, during which he was reportedly tortured.

Bribery and suicide

According to the allegations, the police demanded a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh for Sanjay's release. After paying Rs. 50,000, Sanjay was released but was asked to arrange the remaining amount by June 22. Unable to gather the balance due to his financial constraints as a poor farmer, Sanjay tragically committed suicide on the night of June 21.

Second suicide in the family

The tragedy deepened when Sanjay's elder brother, Pramod, who served as a constable with the Homeguard, lodged a complaint against SHO Mukesh Kumar of PS Sadabad, Hathras. Instead of addressing the complaint, the police allegedly harassed Pramod. Three days later, he also took his own life by hanging from the same tree.

Inadequate police response

Despite these tragic losses, the police response has been criticized as inadequate. SHO Mukesh Kumar was suspended, but no FIR has been lodged against the implicated policemen. The families of the deceased are demanding justice and accountability for the alleged police brutality and harassment that led to these tragic deaths. The events in Hathras have sparked outrage and calls for justice. The incidents highlight the urgent need for police reform and accountability to prevent such abuses of power and ensure that the rights and dignity of individuals are protected.
