Haryana Elections 2024: Congress announces first lists with 31 candidates, fields star wrestler Vinesh Phogat in Julana

New Delhi: The Congress party has released its first list of 31 candidates for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections scheduled for October 5, 2024. Former wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who joined the Congress earlier today, has been given the ticket to contest from the Julana constituency. Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda will be running from the Garhi Sampla Kiloi seat, a stronghold for the senior leader.

Other prominent names include Surender Panwar, who will contest from Sonipat, Jagbir Singh Malik from Gohana, and Bharat Bhushan Batra from Rohtak. Haryana Congress chief Udai Bhan has been fielded from Hodal, while Mewa Singh will challenge Haryana CM and BJP leader Nayab Saini in Ladwa.

New faces and key constituencies

The Congress is also fielding Kuldeep Vata from Badli, Geeta Bhukkal from the reserved SC seat of Jhajjar, Chiranjeev Rao from Rewari, Aftab Ahmed from Nuh, and Neeraj Sharma from Faridabad NIT. With just weeks to go before the state polls, the party is working to capitalize on anti-incumbency sentiments against the BJP, which has been in power in Haryana for the last 10 years.

Election timeline

Candidates have until September 12 to file their nominations, with the scrutiny scheduled for September 13. The final date for withdrawal of nominations is September 16. Votes will be counted on October 8, determining the fate of the major political parties. Earlier, the BJP announced a list of 67 candidates, dropping eight sitting MLAs in a move to counter anti-incumbency and inject fresh energy into their campaign.
