After the eventful farmers’ protest, people in Haryana are preparing for yet another stand-off with the Centre. Farmers’ unions and the Khap panchayats in Haryana are planning to assemble outside the parliament building on the same day as the new parliament building is inaugurated in a grand event in New Delhi on Sunday. The protestors are planning to hold a maha panchayat while the central government prepares for the big inauguration ceremony.

A kisan panchayat was held on Thursday at the Khatkar toll booth on the national Jind-Narwana highway in Haryana. At the occasion, Satya Pal Malik, a former governor of Jammu and Kashmir, appeared on stage alongside farmers’ union representatives and a number of protesting wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat. Olympic medalists Punia and Phogat have been travelling over Haryana and adjoining states asking for backing for the maha panchayat on Sunday.

“When we won medals for our country, we were made to feel that girls get enormous respect in this country,” Phogat said at the occasion, criticising the lack of action against Brij Bhushan. Today, however, those very daughters are compelled to wait on the streets for justice, and nobody seems to care. This conflict is fought for the Tricolor’s honour. On May 28, a maha panchayat will be held in front of the Parliament building.

“We call on every woman and young person in this nation to travel to New Delhi and take part in this maha panchayat. We’ll get rid of everyone like Brij Bhushan, who holds important roles in many sports federations, including wrestling,” she continued. The maha panchayat makes Haryana BJP confront a huge adverse impact on a day when PM Modi is set to open the new Parliament building, one of his government’s most significant projects.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has begun organising “Jan Samvad” sessions across the state since April after noticing dissatisfaction from the public, particularly in rural regions. He visits each district for three days and engages with the people there, particularly in villages and semi-urban areas. Khattar has so far visited the four districts of Sirsa, Kurukshetra, Palwal, and Bhiwani. On Friday, the Mahendragarh district’s Jan Samvad campaign will come to a close. As of today, the CM has visited more than 50 villages. The CM has concentrated on solving local municipal issues, ensuring timely crop purchases, and paying crop loss debts.

The fact that the protesting wrestlers not only inspired the opposition and garnered backing from Khaps and farmer organisations but also certain members of Khattar’s party (BJP) and ally Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) has made the situation worse for him. Former Union minister Birender Singh, his son, Hisar MP Brijendra Singh, and Haryana Power Minister Ranjit Singh, an Independent MLA from Rania, are among the BJP titans who have pledged their support. Dushyant Chautala, a leader in the JJP and deputy chief minister, has sought the “strictest possible punishment” based on the FIRs filed against Brij Bhushan. The Delhi Police have begun investigating the case, and both sides have volunteered to submit to polygraph exams.
