In a shocking case from Gwaltoli, Kanpur, a woman was allegedly forced into halala and raped by her brother-in-law after being given triple talaq by her husband. The disturbing incident came to light after the victim reported that her in-laws used Sharia law as a means to justify the abuse. The police have arrested the husband and brother-in-law, and both were sent to jail following the registration of a report on September 11.

According to the sources, the woman has claimed that the harassment and dowry demands were started soon after her wedding.

The victim’s ordeal began after her marriage on October 26, 2020, when her in-laws allegedly began harassing her for dowry. Despite filing a police complaint, which resulted in a compromise between both parties on January 23, 2024, the harassment continued. After the settlement, the in-laws escalated their threats, with her husband eventually delivering a triple talaq at the instigation of his family members, including his sister, mother, and father.

Rape in the name of Halala

Locked in a room with her children and subjected to daily abuse, the victim faced another horrifying ordeal on June 11, 2024. The victim alleges that her mother-in-law, citing Sharia law, claimed that the triple talaq was valid and that she must undergo halala - a controversial ritual requiring the woman to marry another man before remarrying her former husband. The victim was then forced into her brother-in-law’s room, where he allegedly raped her under the guise of performing halala.

Legal action and arrests

Following her report, the police acted swiftly, registering a case on September 11. On Thursday, both the husband and brother-in-law were taken into custody. The case has reignited calls for stronger protections for women subjected to harmful practices under the guise of religious law.
