New Delhi: The mother of Sanjoy Roy, who stands accused of the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, expressed deep regret and sorrow, stating that her son was a "harmless" person. In an interview with India Today, she lamented that the tragic incident might have been avoided if she had been stricter with him.
"If I had been more strict, then this would not have happened. His father was very strict, and Sanjoy idolized him. But after my husband’s death, everything fell apart. My once beautiful family is now just a memory," she tearfully shared.
She hinted at the possibility that her son might have been influenced or framed, demanding justice for whoever was responsible. "I don’t know who influenced him to do this... If someone has framed him, then that person will be punished," she added.
Sanjoy Roy, according to his mother, had a promising future. He was passionate about sports, particularly boxing, and was an active participant in the National Cadet Corps (NCC). He excelled in school and was known for his caring nature.
"He used to take care of me, and even cooked for me. You can ask the neighbors—he never misbehaved with anyone," she said. Struggling to reconcile the son she knew with the accusations he faces, she continued, "If I meet him, I will ask, 'Babu, why have you done this?' My son was never like this."
Roy’s mother revealed that she had no knowledge of his involvement at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the semi-naked body of the 31-year-old doctor was discovered on August 9. "I had no idea he was posted as a civic volunteer at RG Kar Hospital. That night, he didn’t even have dinner," she recounted, further denying reports of her son visiting prostitutes.
Sources told India Today that Roy visited Sonagachi, Kolkata’s infamous red-light district, before allegedly committing the crime and had consumed alcohol. Police investigations revealed that he had a history of watching pornographic content, with several such clips found on his mobile phone.
Sanjoy’s mother also revealed that he turned to alcohol following the death of his first wife from cancer. "Sanjay’s first wife was a nice girl, and they were happy together. But after she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away, he fell into depression and started drinking," she explained. Roy had reportedly married four times.
In a final note of despair, she added, "I am helpless. My sons-in-law and daughters have abandoned me. I don’t know how to appeal in court. I am alone."
