In a tragic incident, a 24-year-old woman from Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, ended her life on Karwa Chauth following an argument with her husband regarding his gutkha consumption. The woman, identified as Sarika, took the extreme step after performing the traditional Karwa Chauth rituals and fasting throughout the day.

The incident occurred in Jalalpur village, under the jurisdiction of the Jalalpur Police Station, on Sunday night (October 20). Sarika had observed the Karwa Chauth fast, broke it after sighting the moon, and then performed the customary rituals. However, a dispute with her husband, Sulabh Namdev, who was reportedly addicted to chewing gutkha, escalated into a heated argument. The couple had been married since 2021, and Sulabh's tobacco habit had been a point of contention in their relationship.

According to reports, the couple went to bed in separate rooms without having dinner. Around midnight, Sarika took her own life by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in their bedroom. Sulabh discovered his wife’s lifeless body the next morning and immediately alerted the authorities.

Police arrived at the scene, initiated an investigation, and sent Sarika’s body for a post-mortem examination. The authorities are gathering additional information about the family and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Sulabh Namdev and Sarika were cousins who fell in love and got married. However, Sarika’s frustration with her husband's addiction to gutkha became a recurring issue in their marriage. Gutkha, a form of chewing tobacco, is known to be highly addictive and is linked to various health risks, including cancer.
