A 21-year-old woman from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has accused her husband of blackmailing and harassing her online by leaking her private photos and videos on social media. The woman, who had been subjected to these threats, sought help from the Ghatlodia police on Friday, leading to the filing of a defamation and criminal intimidation case against the accused husband.
According to a report, the woman married a year ago and initially lived with her husband’s joint family in a village near Vadodara. However, she claims she was subjected to mistreatment and subsequently moved back to her parental home in Ahmedabad, where she began working at a local store. She further stated that she had to leave her in-laws' home due to severe skin allergies, resulting in blisters on her back and chest.
The woman alleges that during their marriage, her husband had access to her Instagram account and continued using it even after she moved to her parental home. She suspects that during a video call, her husband secretly recorded her without consent when she showed him her upper body to prove her allergy was healing.
When she refused to return to her in-laws’ home and demanded a divorce, the husband reportedly started blackmailing her. In the first week of January, he allegedly uploaded her private pictures and videos on WhatsApp and Instagram, aiming to tarnish her reputation.
Distressed by the ongoing threats and online humiliation, the woman approached the police for assistance. The Ghatlodia police registered a case under the Indian Penal Code for criminal intimidation and defamation, and an investigation is currently underway.
