New Delhi: Heavy rainfall over the past two days has inundated parts of Gujarat, displacing hundreds of residents to safer locations. Navsari, one of the worst-affected districts, is under a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Monday, August 26. The district recorded a maximum rainfall of 527 mm, pushing the Purna and Kaveri rivers above danger levels.As a precautionary measure, Navsari district collector Kshipra S Agre confirmed that 102 people were evacuated from Bilimora Nagar Palika. “A red alert has been issued for Navsari district on the 25th and 26th of August... Maximum rainfall of 527 mm has been recorded, but it has not caused any damage in the district,” said Agre.Auranga river and the turmoil The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescued a person stranded in the Auranga River in Valsad. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has instructed officials to move residents from low-lying areas to safer grounds. Valsad, Tapi, Navsari, Surat, Narmada, and Panchmahal districts are among the most impacted. The IMD forecasts continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across south Gujarat districts, including Vadodara, Surat, and Bharuch, extending to Saurashtra regions like Amreli and Bhavnagar. Valsad SDM Astha Solanki reported, “There has been around 120 mm of rainfall in the city of Valsad since last night... Around a hundred families have been shifted.”Gujarats 206 reservoirs are now holding 65% of their total capacity, with 72 on high alert. The Sardar Sarovar Narmada dams water level is near full capacity, leading to the opening of 15 radial gates for water discharge.
