Incessant heavy rains have wreaked havoc across Gujarat, leading to devastating floods that have claimed three lives and left seven others missing. The relentless downpours have submerged low-lying areas, causing extensive damage and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate to safer locations. In Morbi district, where the situation is particularly dire, seven individuals were swept away by the surging floodwaters and remain untraceable despite ongoing rescue efforts.
With the state reeling under the impact of the floods, the Gujarat government is on high alert. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has been closely monitoring the situation, holding virtual meetings with district officials to assess the damage and coordinate rescue operations. In response to the escalating crisis, a statewide holiday has been declared for primary schools to ensure the safety of students.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also stepped in, offering the state's full support and promising additional assistance from central forces if required. "Hon'ble Union Home Minister Amitbhai Shah had a telephone conversation with me today to get the details of the situation caused by heavy rains in Gujarat. He has assured the necessary assistance, including sending more help from central forces for rescue relief and disaster management in the state if required," Patel tweeted.
The heavy rains have taken a toll on infrastructure, with a bridge on National Highway 56 in Chhota Udepur sustaining significant damage, disrupting vehicle movement. In response to the worsening conditions, over 17,000 people have been evacuated from flood-prone areas, with 1,653 individuals rescued by National and State Disaster Response Forces. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days, urging residents to remain indoors and avoid venturing near water bodies.
