New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday criticized Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut for her controversial comments regarding the farmers' protest. In a post on social platform X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi accused the Modi government’s propaganda machinery of disrespecting farmers who have been fighting for their rights.

Gandhi stated, "The propaganda machinery of the Modi government, which has failed to fulfill the promises made to the farmers, is continuously engaged in insulting the farmers." He added that Ranaut’s comments, labeling farmers as "rapists and representatives of foreign forces," serve as yet another example of the BJP’s anti-farmer stance.

Rahul Gandhi's remarks on Ranaut

Gandhi condemned Ranaut’s remarks as a "shameful insult" to the farmers of India, especially those in western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab. He highlighted that, despite the sacrifices made by farmers during the 378-day struggle, including losing 700 lives, the government has failed to address key concerns like Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantees, and has yet to provide relief to the families of the martyred farmers. Instead, Gandhi noted, the government is focused on defaming these farmers.

Gandhi emphasized that "the betrayal of farmers by the Modi government cannot be hidden by disrespecting the food providers and attacking their dignity." He reassured that the opposition alliance, INDIA, is committed to ensuring legal MSP guarantees for farmers, regardless of any conspiracies by BJP leaders.

Kangana Ranaut's controversial remarks spark backlash

Kangana Ranaut, a newly elected BJP MP, ignited controversy by claiming that the farmers' protests could have led to a crisis similar to that in Bangladesh if the government had not intervened. In a clip from her interview with a Hindi daily, she alleged that "bodies were hanging and rapes were taking place" during the protests.

The BJP quickly distanced itself from Ranaut’s remarks, with party leaders expressing disagreement and instructing her to refrain from making such comments in the future. The BJP clarified that Ranaut is neither authorized nor permitted to comment on party policy matters.
