New Delhi: In a shocking incident in Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh, a 65-year-old Dalit man has been subjected to public humiliation. He was paraded around the village with a garland of shoes around his neck. The perpetrators behind this degrading act are allegedly associates of the upper caste village head and her husband. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for action against the culprits responsible for the blatant caste-based discrimination and abuse.

Where it took place?

The incident unfolded in Birner village, where Premnarayan Ravidas, the victim, alleges that he has been falsely accused of molestation by Gulabchand Gupta, the husband of the village head (gram pradhan). Ravidas contends that the accusation is baseless and has caused him undue hardship and stigma in the community. The allegation has stirred local tensions and prompted calls for a fair investigation into the matter to ascertain the truth and ensure justice for Ravidas.

Caste-based discrimination in India

Caste-based discrimination and abuse remain pervasive issues in India, deeply entrenched in social, economic, and political spheres. Despite legal protections and affirmative action policies, marginalized caste groups, particularly Dalits and Adivasis, continue to face systemic discrimination in access to education, employment, healthcare, and social opportunities. Discriminatory practices include social segregation, violence, economic exploitation, and denial of basic rights and dignity. Efforts to address these issues involve legal reforms, awareness campaigns, and grassroots activism, yet challenges persist due to ingrained social norms and attitudes. Addressing caste-based discrimination remains a critical aspect of India's journey towards social justice and equality.
