New Delhi: A dramatic scene unfolded at the SDM court in Kotwali area on Thursday from 1:30 pm to 5 pm. The incident involved a love marriage and live-in relationship between a young man and a girl from different communities, causing a significant uproar.

Unexpected couple?

The girl, a hotel management graduate, and her lover, a 9th-pass painter, surprised everyone with their high-voltage drama. After living together for two months, the couple refused to marry following a seven-hour ordeal at the court. Their families, opposing the union, managed to intervene, resulting in the couple’s separation.

What was the conflict all about?

The commotion began when the couple, attempting to register their marriage, were confronted by their families. The girl, a resident of Haldwani, and her lover had fallen in love two years ago when he worked in her neighborhood. Despite familial objections, the girl moved in with her lover two months ago. They applied for marriage on April 18, leading to a notice being posted at the SDM court.

Family's objection

A social organization informed the girl’s family upon seeing the marriage notice. When the couple arrived at the court on Thursday afternoon, the girl’s family objected, causing a scene. The police tried to mediate for about four hours, but the couple remained adamant about staying together.

Police intervention

SO Vanbhulpura Neeraj Bhakuni intervened, taking the couple to the police station where the families continued to argue for over two hours. The police tried to reason with the couple in a separate room. Eventually, around 7 pm, both parties agreed to part ways in writing. The girl gave her statement at the SDM court before the police sent them home with their families.

Disputed marriage claims

During police questioning, the boy claimed they married in Bareilly according to customs but failed to provide proof, saying he had no receipt. The girl's side resorted to physical altercations with the boy’s family, prompting police intervention to keep the peace.

Final moments

Despite the family's objections, the couple held hands and spoke of staying together until they left the police station. They descended the SDM Court stairs together, crying and signing the written agreement, marking the end of their attempt to formalize their relationship.
