Ghazipur: Woman, child die after falling into waterlogged drain

The woman and her child were on their way to the weekly Budh Bazaar held in the Ghazipur Police Station area of East Delhi, had fallen into a waterlogged semi-constructed drain and drowned. The drain is approximately 15 feet deep and 6 feet wide.

A tragic incident has come to light amid incessant rains from East Delhi, where woman and her child drowned after falling into a waterlogged drain in the Ghazipur area following heavy rains on Wednesday. According to ANI, the deceased were identified as Tanuja (22) and her child, Priyansh (3), residents of Prakash Nagar Khoda Colony, Ghaziabad.

According to the police, a distress call was received on Wednesday evening at about 8:12 pm regarding a woman and a child drowning in a drain. The Police Response Vehicle (PRV) was immediately reached the location.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that Tanuja and her child Priyansh, who were en route to the weekly Budh Bazaar held in the Ghazipur Police Station area of East Delhi, had fallen into a waterlogged semi-constructed drain and drowned. The drain is approximately 15 feet deep and 6 feet wide.

Meanwhile, police have recovered the bodies and have initiated a legal action will be taken by the Ghazipur East Delhi Police Station. 

In another incident, a house in Delhi's Sabzi Mandi neighborhood collapsed in the midst of intense downpours. Five fire tenders in all were dispatched to the scene quickly. However, traffic congestion caused officials from the fire brigade to be delayed. Reportedly, the incident happened at 8:57 pm.

Earlier in the day, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena, cautioned all officers to remain alert in light of the ongoing heavy downpour in the national capital. 

Heavy rains witnessed in Delhi-NCR

As a respite from the oppressive heat, rain fell on Wednesday night in a number of areas of Delhi and the nearby National Capital Region (NCR). But the rain caused a great deal of traffic gridlock all throughout town. Airport sources report that between 7:30 and 8:00 pm, Delhi had ten flight diversions as a result of the unfavorable weather.

Severe waterlogging was observed near AIIMS after incessant rainfall in the national capital. Traffic jams were also witnessed in the several areas of Delhi after rain lashed the city.

Meanwhile, IMD has issued warning for heavy rainfall in Delhi and adjoining areas.
