New Delhi: On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, dense fog wreaked havoc on the Delhi Meerut Expressway (DME) and Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) in Ghaziabad, leading to two significant pile-ups involving around 50 vehicles and injuring at least five people. Fortunately, all injured individuals are reported to be stable, with no fatalities.

Accident Details and Eyewitness Accounts

The first pile-up occurred at approximately 7:30 AM on the DME, about 2 kilometers from the Hawa Hawai restaurant. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Surendra Nath Tiwari, a bus collided with another vehicle, triggering a chain reaction that involved 30-35 vehicles. A passenger traveling from Roorkee recounted how their vehicle was struck from behind after they had to brake for a stationary bus, resulting in missed job interviews in Delhi.

Second Collision on Eastern Peripheral Expressway

Meanwhile, a second accident on the EPE involved 20-25 cars and resulted in two additional injuries. Assistant Commissioner of Police Siddharth Gautam confirmed that low visibility due to fog was the primary cause of both incidents. The accidents led to significant traffic congestion on the expressways, which police later managed to clear.

Weather Conditions and Traffic Disruptions

The dense fog conditions have been prevalent in the region recently, contributing to multiple road accidents. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution during such weather conditions to prevent further incidents. The police are actively working to ensure the safety of commuters and restore normal traffic flow on these busy expressways.
