As Germany took note on disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha, the BJP on Thursday accused the Congress for inviting foreign powers for intervening in India’s internal matters and the Opposition party hit back. Meanwhile, Congress  alleged that its rival was attempting to divert attention from the Adani issue. On Thursday, Germany declared that they had taken note of the decision on the initial suspension of Rahul Gandhi as a member of parliament.

Remarks by Germany of Rahul Gandhi’s Suspension

Germany’s foreign ministry spokesperson at a press conference said, “We have taken note of the verdict of first instance against Indian opposition politician Rahul Gandhi as well as the suspension of his parliamentary mandate.” “To our knowledge, Mr Gandhi is in a position to appeal the verdict. It will then become clear whether this verdict will stand and whether the suspension of his mandate has any basis.”

“Standards of judicial independence and fundamental democratic principles” will equally apply to the proceedings against Rahul Gandhi, the German spokesperson added.

Before this, United States department of State Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel during a press conference in Washington said that “US is keeping eye on Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification case in the Indian Courts. He said, “Respect for the rule of law and judicial independence is a cornerstone of any democracy, and we are watching Rahul Gandhi’s case in Indian courts.” Patel further stated that US engage with Indian government on a shared commitment to democratic values, including freedom of expression.

Digvijaya Singh, a veteran and senior member of the Congress, praised the German foreign ministry and Richard Walker, the organization’s chief international editor, for “taking note of how the Democracy is being compromised in India through the persecution of Rahul Gandhi” in a tweet on Thursday. He commented on Walker’s tweet, which featured a video of a German foreign ministry spokeswoman responding to Gandhi’s disqualification.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders have criticised Congress and Digvijay Singh for accusing the party for inviting foreign interferences. War intensifies between BJP and Congress, as they take it to Twitter after the interference of foreign countries.

Kiren Rijiju’s reply after Germany’s interference

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju replied, referring to a screenshot of Digvijay Singh’s tweet, said, “Thank you Rahul Gandhi for inviting foreign powers for interference into India’s internal matters.” “Remember, Indian Judiciary can’t be influenced by foreign interference. India won’t tolerate ‘foreign influence’ anymore because our Prime Minister is Shri @narendramodi Ji,” Rijiju said.

Hitting back at Rijiju’s statement on Twitter, Congress’ media department head Pawan Khera said, “Mr. Rijiju, why divert from the main issue? The issue is that the Prime Minister cannot answer Rahul Gandhi’s questions about Adani. Instead of misleading people.”

BJP’s IT department head Amit Malviya was also tagged in Digvijay Singh’s tweet and said, “Shameful that Congress continues to lean on foreign agencies and seek their intervention in India’s internal affairs.” “Rahul Gandhi had recently sought Europe and US intervention and now it is Digvijay Singh. But Law is the Law… Unless somebody thinks Law is not the Law for them.”

What is Rahul Gandhi’s defamation case over Modi remark

Rahul Gandhi was found guilty on March 23 in a 2019 defamation case brought after he said, “Why do all thieves have the Modi surname,” during a campaign rally in Kolar, Karnataka. A Gujarati court had imposed a two-year prison term on him. Currently, Rahul Gandhi has been released on bail. After being found guilty, he lost his right to serve as an elected MP from Kerala’s Wayanad district in the Parliament. A notice to leave his official house in New Delhi was also given to him.
