New Delhi: In a significant development in India’s most notorious sex scandal, an Ajmer court has convicted the remaining six accused in the 32-year-old blackmail and gang rape case. The convicted individuals—Nafees Chishti, Naseem alias Tarzan, Salim Chishti, Iqbal Bhati, Sohil Gani, and Syed Zameer Hussain—are scheduled to be sentenced today at 2 PM.

A scandal that shocked the nation

The case dates back to 1992, when a horrific scandal involving the gang rape and blackmail of over 100 college girls came to light. The accused circulated nude photographs of the victims, causing nationwide outrage. The scandal, which involved a total of 18 accused, has seen nine individuals already sentenced in the past.

One of the main perpetrators, Farooq Chishti, who was the then-president of Ajmer Youth Congress, played a central role in the scandal. He lured the son of a businessman, raped him, and took compromising photos. Farooq then blackmailed the young man into bringing his girlfriend to a poultry farm, where she was also raped and photographed. The exploitation didn’t stop there—Farooq used these photographs to coerce many other girls into a similar fate.

How did the scandal came to light?

The scandal unraveled when the accused took the incriminating photo reels to a color lab for printouts. The lab staff, horrified by the content, leaked the photos, leading to their widespread circulation. The trauma and shame drove six of the victims to commit suicide, further deepening the tragedy.

With today’s verdict, justice has finally caught up with the remaining accused, bringing closure to a dark chapter in Indian legal history.
