G20 Summit: India, Bangladesh held bilateral talks ahead of Summit, signed 3 MoUs

Ahead of G20 Summit Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheik Hasina held bilateral talks on Friday in New Delhi. After this meeting, the two countries also signed three memorandum of understanding (MoUs), including one on cooperation in Digital Payment mechanisms. The two leaders also talked about continuing the cooperation between the nations on different forums in the future and will also inaugurate different events together at a later date.

What were these MoUs about?

The Ministry of External Affairs released a statement on this cooperation between the two countries and said “The MoU on cooperation in Digital Payment mechanism was signed between National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Bangladesh Bank.”

While the first MoU focused on Digital Payment Mechanisms, the second MoU was signed focusing on the renewal of the Cultural Exchange Program (CEP) between India and Bangladesh for 2023-2025. The third MoU was signed between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC).


The statement of the Ministry of External Affairs also mentioned that PM Modi and Sheikh Haisa also focused on the economic partnership between the two nations and they look forward to the beginning of negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), covering trade in goods, and services, and protecting and promoting investment.

Other discussions involved a range of topics on bilateral cooperation, including political and security cooperation, border management, trade and connectivity, water resources, power and energy, development collaboration, and cultural and people-to-people linkages, discussed by the two leaders.

The two leaders also talked about the recent regional development and collaboration in the international arena and both PM Modi and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina look forward to the joint inauguration of several projects that include Agartala-Akhaura Rail Link, Unit-II of the Maitri Power Plant and Khulna-Mongla Rail Link at a convenient date later.

Moreover, in light of the ongoing issue of migrants coming from Myanmar, PM Modi has expressed his appreciation for the burden shouldered by the country in hosting over a million persons displaced from Rakhine State in Myanmar.

The statement also mentions that India has a constructive and positive approach to supporting solutions towards safe and sustainable repatriation of refugees.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also appreciated Prime Minister Modi for the hospitality and the two leaders expressed their desire to continue exchanges at different levels and keep collaborating in order to step up their extensive engagement.
